A burglary suspect wanted in Virginia and three other states remains holed up in a western Maryland hotel Thursday with a woman believed to be his pregnant girlfriend. Doctors are standing by in case she goes into labor.

Maryland State police spokesman Greg Shipley says 26-year-old James Prevatt III allegedly had threatened to kill the woman and any officers who approached him.

Shipley says the standoff began around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night when state troopers and sheriff's deputies went to the America's Best Value Inn in Hancock to arrest Prevatt.

Prevatt is wanted in Maryland, South Carolina, Massachusetts and Virginia on burglary and larceny charges.

Shipley says police don't know if Prevatt is armed. No shots have been fired.

Five state police hostage negotiators were on the scene Thursday morning.
