With thousands of young people moving back to Harrisonburg for college, local police are warning them about trying to use fake IDs.

Police confiscate the fakes every weekend. The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control handles these issues at stores and restaurants, but police get involved during off-campus incidents, most of which involve incidents of being drunk in public.

"And then add on top of that, presenting a fake ID, or fictitious ID, or altered ID is just going to increase the problems that you're going to run into," says Harrisonburg Police Lt. Kurt Boshart.

Police say, in most cases, people caught trying to use fake IDs have their licenses suspended and pay a fine and court costs. The maximum penalty is $2,500 and/or a year in jail.
