Federal authorities say two brothers have been charged with allegedly growing more than 1,000 marijuana plants in the Rockbridge County area of the George Washington National Forest.

Officials say 46-year-old Michael Jay Shifflett of Glasgow and 51-year-old Jackson David Shifflett, Jr. of Natural Bridge Station were arrested this week after being indicted by a federal grand jury in Harrisonburg.

The U.S. attorney's office in Roanoke says both men were charged with conspiracy, possession and intent to distribute marijuana.
