On the three year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's landfall, we look back at how some Valley residents made a difference.
Within weeks of Hurricane Katrina's landfall, Valley residents pulled together to form the Valley Responds. Residents donated food, supplies and their time to help out our adopted city, Long Beach, Mississippi.
Hundreds of volunteers made the trip down to Mississippi to lend a helping hand in a storm ravaged town. The Valley Responds still keeps in touch with the people of Long Beach.
Rodney Burkholder, the volunteer coordinator, says, "One lady that comes to mind, her mentality was just 'burn it all up'. And when we actually got in there and got to helping her, she got the spirit, and now she's back in her house."
Looking into the future, Hurricane Gustav has set a similar path towards the Gulf Coast. Burkholder says that if community interest is there, another trip will be set for Gustav's clean up if it's needed.
