Waynesboro police say a man was in critical condition after being shot in the chest on Pine Street Monday night.

Police say they got to the scene around 6:10 p.m. after receiving calls about gunshots. Once on the scene, they found 21-year-old Josh Via, who had suffered the gunshot wound.

After questioning three or four people who were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, police have a lot of different accounts of what happened, one of which includes Via shooting himself.

An automatic handgun was recovered at the scene, and police say they're still investigating the incident.

For now, Cpl. Todd Armentrout says they want to drive home that the surrounding neighborhood is safe.

He says, "We don't feel that there is any danger to the community or that there are any gunman on the loose. We believe that this incident is contained and isolated."

Armentrout says Via was first take to the Augusta Medical Center and then flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center. As of Tuesday morning, Via had been upgraded to serious condition.

Police say the incident is still under investigation.
