A number of Augusta County school students are recovering at home Monday after the school bus they were on collided with a car and then hit a tree. The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. on Hangers Mill Road.

State police say the narrow width of the road may be one reason for the crash.

Trooper Eddie Philpott says, "It's an unavoidable accident at the place of the accident."

However, the question remain as to whether the crash could have been prevented.

Passenger Wendy Hodge says, "It hit it and then we just went flying and then I hit my head and then thats all I remember."

State police acknowledge the road is narrow. They say both the bus and car were coming around a curve and simply couldn't avoid each other. So now people might be wondering what a school bus was doing on Hangers Mill Road in the first place.

Philpott says, "It's the only size vehicle that the school has to transport that many students. Even the smaller buses are the same width."

Augusta County Superintendent Dr. Gary McQuain says he's thankful the students all made it off the bus unharmed. He also says he's concerned for the driver of the car, who went to Augusta Medical Center for treatment.

McQuain remarks, "Tough day but it looks like the best thing we can say is it doesn't appear anybody was critically injured."

Hodge says the experience was a scary one, but seeing her parents when they came to pick her up after the accident made everything OK.

She says, "They were crying and then I started crying. I was just glad that everyone was OK."

State police say no one will be charged in the crash. The driver of the car appeared to have only minor injuries.
