The city of Waynesboro may be constructing new sidewalks and bike paths in an effort to make itself more pedestrian friendly.
The Waynesboro Planning Commission is meeting Tuesday night to talk about ways the River City can appeal to more walkers and bikers. Some ideas include adding sidewalks and bike trails from subdivisions to shopping centers and schools.
City planner Jim Shaw says the current economic situation and rising gas prices are reasons for the new plans.
He explains, "Planners are starting to see a lot of conversation and even in the general news media about people buying bicycles, buying more bicycles or walking to work and that sort of thing."
Shaw says he's not sure how the project will be funded. The plans are in the preliminary stages at this time.

I couldn't agree more that this needs to take place, today there were 3 young kids on bikes that crossed 4 lanes of traffic after the light had turned green, how they kept from getting hit I do not know, there are alot of danger areas for walkers as well as bicyclists in Waynesboro and they couldn't fix that fast enough as far as I'm concerned, especially areas surrounding the park, such as Lyndhurst road, there is a stretch of Lyndhurst that is extremely dangerous for walker and bicycles alike where there is no side walk on either side, very little room for walkers, bikes and cars at the same time. Surprising someone hasn't already gotten seriously hurt there.
