A fire ripped through a Crimora body shop Tuesday, destroying not only the building, but also thousands of dollars worth of antique cars inside. There is no word yet on how the blaze started, but firefighters say they suspect an air compressor may be to blame.
Fire officials say there were a number of hazardous materials inside the shop, including propane tanks, torches, and air compressors. Those items were used to help restore antique cars, a number of which were lost in the blaze.
Fire official Mike Fisher says firefighters had to battle the fire without going inside the structure because of the chemicals.
Fisher explains, "The fire consumed most of the hazardous materials, so there’s going to be very little hazard left to really be worried about."
Fisher says the building was not insured, but he says, luckily, no one was inside when the fire broke out and no injuries were reported.
