Saturday, firefighters gave away about 250 smoke detectors and 600 carbon monoxide detectors. A $47,000 federal grant made the project possible.
Captain Jeff Smith says the fire department's goal is to have at least one detector in every Staunton home.
Free detectors will be available later this week, as well. City residents can stop by the station on North Augusta Street to pick up their detectors after Wednesday.
Free installation is also available for those who need it.
