Crews will install roadway sensors on northbound Interstate 81 in portions of Rockingham and Augusta counties Tuesday and Wednesday night.
The Virginia Department of Transportation says the work is part of a project to install eight such monitoring sites that will make up a Road and Weather Information System (RWIS) along Interstate 81 in the Staunton District.
Equipment at each of the eight sites will include cameras, traffic monitors and sensors that record the temperature of the roadway surface and subsurface.
In addition to weather data, the sites will provide vehicle counts and speeds.
V-DOT will use the information to assess and respond to traffic and weather conditions.
The eight RWIS sites are in or near Winchester, Harrisonburg, Bridgewater, Staunton, Greenville and Natural Bridge.
