Some good news for Virginians who are a little behind filing this year. You have until May 1 to file your state returns.
In Rockingham County, the Commissioner of Revenue's office processes about 20,000 local income tax returns each year. And they do it for free.
Richard Connellee, Revenue Commissioner says, "We also offer the service if you bring us a copy of your federal we will assist you by doing your state income tax for you."
Connellee says the number of tax returns his office processes is decreasing due to the popularity of electronic filing. But he says his small staff is keeping busy filling out and correcting county residents' tax papers.
County residents can get their taxes done within fifteen minutes free of charge. A tax preparer could charge up to $100 for that service.
