The President of the PTB at Beverley Manor Elementary School spoke out Sunday about Augusta County School Board's plans to consolidate the school.
The board says efficiency, complaints, and structural improvements are causing it to consider the consolidation. However, for many parents, those reasons are tough to swallow.
Officials say either Ladd Elementary or Beverley Manor Elementary will be consolidated for at least three and a half years if the plan is passed.
Some parents of students at the school aren't worried. On the other hand, some are.
Sara Rexrode says, "I don't want this school to close. I really like the small town feel, the small community feel."
Rexrode has two sons that attend Beverley Manor Elementary, one in the first grade and one taking part in the preschool class offered. She worries the dynamic within the school will change.
Rexrode says, "That's a great thing about our county. We are spread out, but we have a lot of elementary schools, so our children are able to get that personal experience."
If the school is consolidated, school officials say 52 percent of the students may be moved to Churchville Elementary and 48 percent to Riverheads Elementary.
Rexrode says, "I can tell you my son is actually in Title 1 reading now, so he gets lots of extra support. If he went to larger school, would he be able to get that one on one? I don't think so."
Rexrode also serves as President of the Parent-Teacher Booster. She says many parents would be in the same boat and they aren't in favor of the potential effects it would have on their child.
She says, "We do not want BME to close, and we want everyone to understand it is a proposal. It is not set in stone, and it's not going to be something that happens today or tomorrow."
Rexrode says Superintendent Dr. Gary McQuain will be on hand to answer questions at the school on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. as part of the Bookfair Family Night.
School board members say the next step is meeting with the Augusta County Board of Supervisors.
