Arlington County has announced a hiring freeze and other measures to help address a projected $10-million budget shortfall.

County Manager Ron Carlee announced the freeze Thursday in a memo to county employees. He also ordered the elimination of discretionary spending.

In addition to the county budget gap, Carlee says the Arlington school district faces a $7.5 million shortfall.

Carlee says Arlington is better positioned than many other local governments in the region, but isn't immune to the downturn.
