The slogan for the third annual Augusta County Memory Walk Saturday was "On the Move."

Staunton resident Robert Weaver knew it was going to be a tough battle when his wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease more than three years ago.

Weaver says, "Especially when it's a loved one. You want to take care of them and do the best you can, so it's just to let others know that there is a need for research, especially research, to find if there is a cure for this disease."

He says he understands he's not the only one dealing with the emotional struggles of the disease.

Weaver adds, "There is quite a bit of Alzheimer's in this area, but people just aren't aware on how to fix not only the one that has Alzheimer's but the family and friends of that person."

Weaver says Alzheimer's doesn't just affect the person with the disease but the family and friends of that person as well. His daughter, Jennifer Weaver, is also coping. She says events like the Memory Walk bring life to the situation.

She says, "It excites us knowing that there is hope out there that a cure can be found so that other families won't have to go through what we're going through, because it is a devastating disease."

Weaver says there's only one way to deal with the disease.

He says, "You just go day by day, and do the best you can that day. Don't look ahead. Just do the best you can that day."

He has a special message to others that are affected by Alzheimer's.

He says, "If someone in your family or a friend has this sad disease, get involved with a support group."

Alzheimer's disease effects 5.2 million Americans nationwide and more than 100,000 people in Virginia.
