Guilty verdicts were handed down on 25 counts today against a Rockingham County man accused of leaving about 100 cattle to starve to death.
Sixty-two-year-old Jennings Shifflett entered into a plea agreement on one felony count of animal cruelty, nine counts of animal neglect and 15 counts of inappropriate animal disposal.
Animal control officers acting on a tip went to Shifflett's farm north of Harrisonburg on February. They found 58 dead cows and several others in such poor health the cattle had to be euthanized.
Shifflett will be sentenced July 21. Under the plea agreement, he will serve six months in jail, pay a $7,500 fine and cannot own livestock again.
