Every year, flooding is the leading cause of property loss from natural disasters.
Virginia has gotten plenty of rain in recent weeks and the Federal Emergency Management Agency is reminding Virginians to consider buying flood insurance.
FEMA Spokesman Len DeCarlo says a lot of people don't realize they don't have flood insurance. They tend to think it just comes with the regular home owners policy when it doesn't.
Coverage under FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program can be purchased through local insurance agents. DeCarlo says there are two components to flood insurance and they're purchased separately.
The first is for the first floor of the structure and some supporting areas of the basement.
The second is for the contents.
DeCarlo says there's a 30-day waiting period from the time the coverage is purchased before it takes effect.
