Gov. Wise released a statement Monday saying he was not faithful to his family and hopes one day for forgiveness.
Wise issued the statement in response to inquiries from the Charleston Daily Mail, which is reporting allegations by a Kanawha County man that the governor had an affair with his estranged wife.
Wise said that several weeks ago, he had to do the toughest thing he's ever done, tell his family he hadn't lived up to their trust, expectation and love.
Wise also apologized to state residents for his actions. Wise, a Democrat elected in 2000, did not provide further details.
Press Secretary Amy Shuler Goodwin says the governor is not planning to resign and that his statement does not affect his re-election plans.
Philip Frye of Hugheston told the Daily Mail that his divorce case includes allegations that Wise had an affair with his wife, Angela Mascia-Frye.
Angela Mascia-Frye oversees European operations for the West Virginia Development Office. She has declined to comment.
