Prison overpopulation is the subject of an upcoming conference at Stonewall Jackson Resort.
The West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety is hosting the three-day conference starting November 12.
Department Secretary James Spears says the rising prison population is quickly outstripping the capacity to care for state inmates. He said solutions much be sought from all levels of state government and civic organizations.
The department says more than 1,100 inmates now housed in the regional jail system are awaiting bed space in a state prison. Forecasts call for an additional 1,100 inmates to be sent to the Division of Corrections through 2012.
The conference will include criminal justice experts from other states that have faced similar challenges.
