An Ohio company is looking at whether the Tygart Dam can be retrofitted to become a hydroelectric plant.

Advanced Hydro Solutions has a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to see if it's feasible to convert the dam, located near Grafton.

The dam was built in 1935 to provide flood protection and to aid navigation downstream.

Now, Advanced Hydro President David Sinclair says with the demand for cleaner forms of energy, retrofitting the nation's dams is a viable solution.

Hydroelectric plants use the water's flow to turn turbines that create the power.

The corps permit gives the Fairlawn, Ohio, company up to three years to determine if it's feasible to convert the dam.
