The acting fire chief at the New Market Volunteer Fire Company, Matthew Hughes, says six people have been suspended after allegations surfaced Wednesday that the company misused more than $30,000 in public funds.

Hughes says only two of the people suspended actively respond to calls. He says their shifts are being covered.

"[I] want to let the community know that the New Market Fire Department is still operational," says Hughes. "The problems we're facing now are strictly administrative. We will continue providing fire services. Shenandoah County Fire and Rescue has also offered extra resources if we would need them."

The Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors and the New Market Town Council voted Wednesday to freeze funding to the New Market Volunteer Fire Company.

The company's board is meeting Friday night to address the allegations against its members.

it is pretty bad that the people that you trust to use your money as it should be used takes advantage of that and uses the money for other things that only benefit themselves and their families. that is pure selfishness and should be punished. i am sure the rest of the department is ok, at least most of them, and those that aren't are quickly exposed. if it is basically that one family, then.....well...shame on you!!!!!!!if you are guilty then so be it!!!!!
