After allegations of the misuse of $30,000 by the New Market Volunteer Fire Company, five people have been fired.
The town of New Market and the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors froze the fire company's funds Wednesday after a report outlining a financial investigation was released.
On Friday night, the company and fire department board members held a closed door meeting. Afterwards Acting Fire Chief Matthew Hughes announced that Chief Danny McAlexander, Chairperson of Ladies Auxiliary Mary Lou McAlexander, Assistant Treasurer and Junior Adviser Mary Frances McAlexander, Treasurer Sara Hathaway, and board member Mac Hathaway were terminated in connection with the audit.
Hughes says the company is not expecting more termination's in the future, and they expect to move forward after Friday night's decision.
"The board has voted unanimously to hire a certified accountant to oversee all of our finances in the future so this will never ever happen again," says Hughes.
That decision is one the town's chairman of public safety, Gary Comer, says should have already been in place.
"This is something that I wanted done eight years ago when I was the first chairman of the financial control board, but I was met with stiff opposition, and now I'm very relieved that it's going to be done," says Comer.
Comer also says he's proud of the team for handling the situation quickly.
He says, "Matt and his team, the board of directors, they need to be congratulated by the town, and it's citizens for taking care of this matter internally, which is what we wanted the whole time."
The company says it wants to let the town know that because of the circumstances with the audit, the bingo event scheduled for Saturday night has been canceled.
A copy of the resolution to the board of supervisors has been turned over to the Shenandoah County Commonwealth's Attorney, who will decide where the investigation goes from here.

We all knew there was nothing anybody could do finally somebody took some action and fyi we all DID know if you didnt thats just crazy because it was right in front of our faces i mean we all talked about it before and knew it was going on finally something is done
This is a shame that this has happened again in New Market.Wasn't it just several years again, that the fire department came under fire. I am glad to hear that the have fired 5 of their members, I hope that if they have enough reason, that they press criminal charges. To many of think that because they are volunteers, that they are above the laws..........
if this is true, it is a shame that they felt they were above the law and took money that wasn't theirs to fund their own selfish desires. i was always taught to work for what i have and that is what they should do. llive within your means and if you have to scrimp do it. i don't see how they slept at night knowing what they were doing!!!!
