A portion of a Preston County mine remains closed following a November 3 accident in which two coal miners were burned when methane gas ignited and caused a flash fire.

Jama Jarrett, a spokeswoman for the state Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training, said the office asked the Whitetail Kittanning Mine to take steps to ensure that the mine is properly ventilated.

Jarrett says injured miners Paul Blake of Morgantown and Thomas Rosenberger of Bruceton Mills have been released from a Pittsburgh hospital and were interviewed by state investigators this week.

Last month the mine, which is owned by Kingwood Mining LLC, was fined more than $763,000 after being cited 13 times in a year for allowing highly combustible coal dust to accumulate along conveyor belts.
