Truck Driver Charged in Fatal Interstate Crash

State police are releasing more information about a crash that killed three people on interstate 81 Friday morning.

Thirty-six-year-old Jose Alberto Sarmiento of Edinburg, Texas, has been charged with reckless driving in connection with the crash. Police say his tractor trailer hit several cars, after traffic slowed because of the weather.

State Police say the slick roads Friday, added to low visibility from falling snow and the bright sun, also played a part in the accident on I81 at Mount Jackson that took the lives of three local people.

Three people are dead, including two small children.

An off-duty EMT from Manassas, Tony Coronodo, saw the first accident and decided to pull over to help. Then he saw a tractor trailer fly by and hit a blue vehicle, which was occupied by two adults and two children.

He says he has never seen an accident this severe and tragic.

Two victims who survived the crash are Glen Johnson of Pennsylvania and John Trull of North Carolina. Both men are amazed that they are alive.

Johnson's car flew up in the air and landed upside down on the shoulder. He crawled out of a space about a foot and a half wide. He says he is lucky and fortunate.

Trull says his heart goes out to the family. He has children and grandchildren and is praying for the family.
