West Virginia does better than most states when it comes to providing health insurance for children, and advocates are wondering if 100-percent coverage is possible within the next few years.

The main tool for bringing coverage to the roughly 29,000 children without health insurance is the state Children's Health Insurance Program. The program provides coverage to children whose parents earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid.

State officials learned Tuesday that the federal government has approved a proposal to expand the CHIP program to families earning up to 250 percent of the federal poverty level, or about $53,000 for a family of four.

But advocates say more can be done to extend coverage to every child in West Virginia.
