New standards would mean more elementary principals, assistant principals and art, music, PE and classroom teachers. It would also change the average student-teacher ratio from 25/1 to 21/1.

The request comes after a recent review of Virginia's Standards of Quality said the state isn't paying its share.

Dr. John Kidd, School Superintendent for Rockingham County, says, "We have spent a lot of money and our board of supervisors has come to our rescue time and time again and the state board is saying the state should have more of a burden in it."

If you're interested in learning more about these proposed changes, public hearings will be held across the state on June10 at 7p.m.
