It could delay the building of a new elementary school by two years. Fifth graders would still move to Thomas Harrison Middle and seventh and eighth graders would move to the old high school.
But there are drawbacks to waiting, according to the board.
"We got a very good price on the high school because a lot of contractors are looking for jobs. So we might lose that. Second, interest rates are at an all time low, if we defer it two-years, we could pay a percent or two more in interest rates over twenty years, that could cost us several million," said Tom Mendez, Harrisonburg School Board.
By waiting two years, it will mean students will remain in the mobile units. City Council will decide which plan it supports on June 20.
