A constitutional amendment regarding eminent domain is one hot topic that will go before the General Assembly in a couple of weeks.

A number of local law-makers say it will protect the property rights of residents in the Commonwealth.

As it stands, the government can take your personal property for public use. It's an issue that has the attention of farmers and everyone who owns property.

Del. Matt Lohr of the 26th District, who also owns a farm, says a more distinct definition will help protect land owners.

"When you think of eminent domain, you think of roads and bridges, schools, those types of things that truly are for public benefit. But when you think about a Wal-Mart or some type of commercial development that may generate some extra tax dollars, I don't think that was the original intent," says Lohr.

Before the amendment can go before voters on a referendum ballot, it must pass in the General Assembly.
