A Harrisonburg woman has been killed in what police believe is a hit-and-run crash Tuesday morning.

Fifty-five-year-old Sherry Anderson, who worked at the Child Development Clinic at JMU, was declared dead at the scene.

Police arrived at the scene of the crash on South Main Street, near Port Republic Road, around 5:30 a.m.

Police say it appears Anderson was jogging along the side of the road when she was hit.

Neighbors say Anderson may have been running with at least two other joggers when the incident happened.

One man, who lives two houses away, says the area is prone to crashes, especially those involving pedestrians.

Neighbor Robert Brown says, "It's a warning to everybody to be careful about what they're doing. I mean, I've certainly walked across the street and maybe waited for traffic, in the median space, in the turn lane. I think we all have to be very very careful out here."

Police are searching the area for the driver who they believe took off immediately after hitting Anderson. Several sources say the car they are looking for is a Toyota Sedan.

The incident is still under investigation. Anyone with any information on the vehicle police are searching for is asked to call Crime Solvers at 540-574-5050.

REPLY TO BOB's COMMENT: You have some nerve ~ how do you sleep at night making such comments in regards to a woman that has lost her life. Why don't have you a comment on here saying "YOU DO NOT DRIVE DRUNK, YOU DO NOT LEAVE THE SCENE WHEN YOU HIT SOMEONE, YOU DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!" You are a shallow human and I have to agree with Tommy (Mrs. Anderson's brother) I hope you never go through something like this within your lifetime.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Anderson and Burcham families. Sherry was a friend during our elementary and Junior High years. Our class, many of us together for twelve years, will miss her.
