The Virginia Beach SPCA is upset with the city for moving 66 geese at Mount Trashmore to an animal sanctuary in North Carolina without notifying the organization.

Executive Director Sharon Adams says the SPCA was a partner with the city in a management plan for the birds.

Another partner, the Humane Society of the United Society, also wasn't notified.

Shawn Hopson, Virginia Beach's open-space manager, organized the December 17 geese roundup. Hopson took the geese in a dump truck to the sanctuary in Monroe, North Carolina.

Hopson says he didn't notify the organizations because he was afraid the sanctuary might change its mind. He also says he wanted to get the birds to the sanctuary before the holidays.

The sanctuary is run by Jeff Wylie. Wylie says the geese adjusted well to their new home.
