Councilman Jerry Petefish, from the town of Stanley, resigned from office in Page County Circuit Court Wednesday.

Petefish reached an agreement with prosecutors to drop felony charges against him if he would resign from office.

He was charged with willfully making false statements about his residency during his 2006 run for town council.

Last April, a special grand jury indicted Petefish and fellow council candidate Gary Depriest on two counts of making false statements on documents filed with the Page County registrar's office.

Petefish is a retired police chief.
