The hit-and-run Tuesday morning has residents becoming more aware of how visible they are while exercising outside.

While there are reflectors on athletic sneakers and clothes, Craig Lawry, owner of Runner's Corner in Harrisonburg, says that it's probably not enough.

"I say you should light yourself up like a Christmas tree," says Lawry.

In addition to the reflectors on athletic shoes, those exercising outside should wear extra reflectors or lights on their clothing. Lawry says his customers are buying more reflective gear in response to the deadly incident.

"It's been a little short for now but I think yes, it's kind of a wake up call, yes," says Lawry.

Fifty-five-year-old Sherry Anderson, who was jogging near the intersection of South Main Street and Port Republic Road, was wearing a reflective hat, jacket and shoes when she was hit by what police say was a drunk driver.

While it may have not made a difference in Anderson's case, Lawry recommends runners wear safety vests and reflective wristbands to make themselves more visible to drivers. These items may not cost much but may help a great deal. For example, a safety vest costs about $25 and a reflective anklet costs about $8.
