In this week's What's Going Around, we begin with a warning from doctors about this year's flu virus.

Dr. Jeffery Feit at Page Memorial Hospital says they're seeing cases of the flu that are unusually resistant to antiviral medications. The Centers for Disease Control has issued an advisory to doctors nationwide, saying that while the flu isn't spreading quickly across the country, the strain going around is especially hard to treat. Feit says patients with the flu have kept him busy in the first part of this month.

There has not yet been an outbreak of the flu in much of the Shenandoah Valley. Instead, the Central Shenandoah Health District says it's seeing patients with gastrointestinal infections. The big warning sign is stomach cramping followed by diarrhea, often caused by something like E. Coli or Salmonella. You may also experience fever, nausea and vomiting.

There's also no flu being reported yet at Waynesboro Pediatrics, but they're starting to see lots of respiratory illnesses. These include bronchiolitis, which is often seen in babies during the winter.

In Harrisonburg, Dr. Gregory Jesteadt says no flu cases to report, but plenty of returning college students have been coming in with mononucleosis. It's often called "the kissing disease" because it's spread through saliva and mucus. Symptoms include swollen lymph nodes and an enlarged spleen.
