Due to early morning heavy snow and ice, Interstate 64 eastbound near Afton Mountain was blocked for a while Thursday.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says I-64 at Afton Mountain was icy and hazardous for drivers after a snow squall passed over the mountain just before dawn.

They also said westbound traffic was stopped due to ice on the road near the mountain summit and eastbound traffic is moving very slowly.

State Police say there were several accidents reported on the interstates.

Driver Mike Winfield says, in one accident, a four-wheel truck spun out on the bridge before you get to U.S. 340.

If you are driving on the interstates and the secondary roads, please use caution and be careful of possible wrecks due to the wintry weather.

At this time, traffic on I-64 is running smoothly.

And that's their parent's problem. Check the website if the bus is 5 minutes late... Simple parenting and common sense. Everybody can live and learn from this... The super made the best call he could as fast as he could.

City kids waited for their busses this morning calling their friends wondering if they had missed the bus because the normal arrival time had come and gone. I had checked to see if there was a delay and there was not. I called the school to find out that the busses were being held until they felt it was safe for them to travel. Hmm, during this time the children were left to stand at their stops wondering what was going on. Seems to me it would have been better to have put the schools on a delay...

I think this storm was a bit of a surprise to everyone and I'm sure Dr. McQuain made his decision as soon as possible. Under normal circumstances the decision to close schools is posted by 6:30. My children also attend Augusta County Schools and I would not have sent them to school or driven them myself, if I felt that they would be in any danger.
