A Chesapeake school shut down because of elevated asbestos levels in the air has reopened.

Chesapeake schools spokesman Tom Cupitt says air quality tests found the air at Crestwood Middle School is now safe.

Crestwood was evacuated Tuesday and remained closed Wednesday after earlier tests found elevated levels of asbestos. The school reopened Thursday.

A contractor has been removing asbestos found in the insulation of old heating pipes during a renovation of Crestwood's heating and air conditioning system. Principal Jacqueline Tate said in a letter to parents that the air quality tests were conducted by an environmental firm monitoring the asbestos removal.
