A West Virginia couple has been charged with giving a three-year-old boy they were baby-sitting a lethal dose of methadone.

Theresa and Oscar Hyatt of Griffithsville turned themselves into State Police on Wednesday. They're being held on $100,000 bond each and face charges of child neglect causing death.

Theresa Hyatt says the incident was a tragic mistake. She told WSAZ-TV that she thought she was giving Danny Cole Ross cold medicine from a bottle in her car on December 22. The boy died a day later.

Police say the Hyatts knew they were giving the boy methadone.

Methadone is an opioid narcotic commonly used as a painkiller. It's been linked to more unintentional fatal overdoses in West Virginia than any other single drug.
