Family and friends are remembering a beloved member of the community, following a memorial service for her Friday morning.

Fifty-five0year-old Sherry Anderson was killed Tuesday in an alleged hit-and-run in Harrisonburg.

A beloved member of the community, Anderson impacted many people's lives.

She worked at JMU's Shenandoah Valley Child Development Clinic. Jerry Benson mentored Anderson almost 30 years ago when she took graduate classes in psychology.

"Sherry was just a consummate professional. She cared deeply for the families, for the parents and children that she worked with," says Benson.

Anderson also worked part-time at Belk, a department store. That's where Tim Hulings worked with her. He spoke with her just hours before she passed away.

"I had to close the store on Monday night and had the opportunity to talk briefly with her just as we closed the store," says Hulings.

Hulings says she was part of a team that won a prize for sales and customer service.

"Purely by chance, I said the perfect thing to her for the last words, and that was, 'Becasue you're special,'" says Hulings. "And, that's a condolence to me, and for those of us that worked with her at Belk, that at least we said the right thing."

In addition to her work ethic, her friend Carolyn Frank remembers Anderson for her faith and commitment to church. They were in a Bible study group together.

"It's a sad day, but yet it was a day that gave us hope and uplifted us to see how one life can touch so many, and how one life can do so much," says Frank.

Anderson was also a mother a four. She was set to celebrate her 30th wedding anniversary in July.

The family says memorial donations are being made to Asbury United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg.
