The city of Waynesboro is dealing with budget pressures in its own way.

A hiring freeze that was slated to end around Christmas is still in effect.

Council members say the freeze is likely to be extended for another 45 or 60 days, as they wait to assess the effects of state budget cuts.

However, the jobs of city planner, city engineer and economic development director are exempt from the freeze.

If a person resigns from a job during the freeze, the job will remain vacant for 45 days unless the city council makes an exception.
