The city of Waynesboro is thinking of adding a penalty for residents who file their personal property taxes late.

Over the last three years, the city council says between 20 percent and 37 percent of residents have filed late or not at all.

That causes delays for the Commissioner of Revenue to establish accurate assessments and tax bills.

When talking about a possible late fee, Waynesboro City Councilwoman Nancy Dowdy says, "It will save us money to become more efficient, which will save the city of Waynesboro money in terms of staff time. It's not a revenue generator. It is more of a compliance issue to get people to comply with what's already in place.

Waynesboro has never charged a penalty for late filing, though there is penalty for late payment. There will be a public hearing on the issue on February 9.

WHAT WAYNESBORO MEANS IS THAT THEY WANT TO RAISE THE PENALTY FOR FILING LATE. THOSE OF US LIVING IN WAYNESBORO SAW THE CURRENT PENALTIES' RATE ON OUR TAXES THIS YEAR. READ IT CAREFULLY, JUST ANOTHER WAY CITIES CAN CHARGE MORE MONEY FOR NO MORE WORK. SOUNDS LIKE TO ME THIER TRYING TO MAKE UP FOR THIER BUDGET SHORTFALL BY CHARGING WORKING AMERICANS. I OWN A 1998 FORD ESCORT THAT THEY WANT $60 FOR PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX, THE CAR'S BARELY WORTH THAT. WAYNESBORO SHOULD'VE THOUGHT ABOUT THAT WHEN THEY GAVE TAX BREAKS TO WAL-MART FOR SETTING UP SHOP IN THE CITY. BY THE WAY THE CITY TELL YOU WHO PAID FOR ALL THE NEW STOP LIGHTS AND ROAD IMPROVEMENTS AROUND WAL-MART. WE DID, THE TAX PAYERS. WHEN THE CITY REIMBURSES ME FOR SOMETHING WAL-MART SHOULD'VE PAID FOR THEMSELVES THEN I'LL PAY A LATE FEE. THERE'S ALREADY A CHARGE FOR A LATE PAYMENT FEE, NOW THEY WANT TO ADD ANOTHER FEE FOR FILING LATE. I THINK IT'S TIME FOR A NEW CITY COUNCIL!!! REMEMBER COUNCILMEN AND WOMEN, YOUR VOTED INTO THAT POSITION.
