The Virginia Port Authority says container traffic at the Port of Hampton Roads has declined for the first time since 2001.

The Virginia Port Authority says container traffic at the Port of Hampton Roads has declined for the first time since 2001.

The authority said Wednesday that container traffic dropped by 2.1 percent in 2008, compared to the previous year.

Authority spokesman Joe Harris says the port handled 2,083,278 20-foot-equivalent units in 2008, compared to 2,128,366 in 2007.
