In this week's "What's Going Around," we begin with the flu that doctors say officially reached the Valley this week.

Harrisonburg's Dr. Gregory Jesteadt has an important warning about the flu. If you have symptoms, including fever, extreme fatigue, runny nose and cough get to a doctor ASAP. Jesteadt says there is a 48-hour window of time when a doctor can prescribe medicine to shorten and lessen the severity of the flu: when you first start seeing symptoms.

If you are the family member or have close contact with someone who has the flu but you did not get the flu shot, contact your doctor to get a prophylaxis medication. This will decrease your chances of getting influenza, too.

Dr. Robert Fern says they had the first confirmed case of influenza in Waynesboro Monday.

Another first at Waynesboro Pediatrics, the first confirmed case of Respiratory Syncytial Virus. RSV infects almost all children before they're two years old. It's marked by wheezing, trouble breathing or rapid breathing. Symptoms appear four or five days after exposure.

The stomach flu is spreading fast in Page County. Viral Gastroenteritis is more commonly called the stomach flu. It can last from one to ten days depending on what virus causes the illness. The stomach flu is contagious and spread through close contact with infected people.
