Apolonio Gumersindo-Santiago had just moved into the trailer park on Universal Drive in Broadway about a month ago, according to neighbors. They say he partied often, but Saturday the fun turned fatal.

According to witnesses who wished to remain anonymous, the 22-year-old had been drinking all day and using marijuana. He allegedly was looking for a fight and in self-defense, another man punched him twice.

Friends apparently dragged Santiago inside his room where he was left overnight and found dead around 2:00 p.m. Sunday. Broadway police have turned the investigation over to the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office.

"Currently, we have what we are calling a suspicious death because there are no definitive marks on the body indicating the cause of death," says Deputy Sheriff Sgt. Felicia Glick.

An autopsy report from the state lab in Roanoke will reveal if Santiago died from trauma, drugs or a combination of both. Police say they may not know for up to five weeks when and how he died.

"Depending on that depends how our investigation of the incident proceeds," says Glick.
