A Suffolk couple face federal charges of embezzling more than $2 million from a Virginia Beach developer.
A 73-count indictment unsealed Monday charges 59-year-old James G. Hiles and his wife, 47-year-old Karen A. Hiles, with conspiracy, uttering, mail fraud, wire fraud, bank fraud and aggravated identity theft.
The indictment charged that the couple embezzled the money from ASR, LLC by forging business checks and wire transfer requests from 2002 through 2007. Karen Hiles was employed as a part-time bookkeeper during that period.
The U.S. Attorney's Office said the money was used for travel, operating a restaurant in Suffolk, buying vehicles and other personal expenditures.
