Janet Dob is baking bagels. And she's doing it like no one else has done before.
They make look like ordinary bagels, but the Bake'Mmm brand is brand new. The bagels are made using a recently-patented process which keeps them more moist and chewy than your average bagel. And they're organic.
"So, the customer can bake it fresh at home in 10-15 minutes. No fuss, no muss, right out of the oven rack," explains manufacturer Janet Dob.
She's been perfecting her bagel process over the last fifteen years. It's been a bumpy ride for her bagels, but Dob said she knew her invention was just too good to give up on.
With help from the New Business Virginia Incubator, the Agnes' Very, Very LLC Company is putting out 1000 bagels a day at its Verona factory.
In time, Dob says she'll produce more bagels in more flavors. Currently, Bake'Mmm's are available in plain, whole wheat and cinnamon raisin. Dob says they have a traditional New York taste and texture. And as for the Bake'Mmm name, Dob says the bagel speaks for itself.
"I always love to watch people's expression on their faces when they taste one for the first time. It's like they close their eyes and go mmmm, and that's where the Bake'MMM comes in," she explains.
In April, Dob beat the candy-making Mars Company for trademark protection of the Bake'Mmm brand name. Mars had been fighting Dob for more than four years, saying she was attempting to copy its M&M trademark.
July first, Dob received her patent for her one-of-a-kind kettling process. It allows her to package bagels without baking them twice or freezing them like other bagel companies do.
With U.S. Patent and Trademark Office approval, Dob will soon be marketing her bagels nationwide. For now, she says she's pleased selling to fresh food markets in Virginia and small shops in the Valley.
"There's a new love affair happening in this area with a bagel and it's a Bake'MMM bagel," she says.
