With the arrival of summer and the heat that goes with it, swimming holes have become much more popular. WHSV discovered one such place that's causing a lot of problems.
Blue Hole is where people go to get away from it all. But it's also very dangerous, thanks to the lack of parking.
"It's a popular area," says Sergeant Felicia Glick of the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office. "We are aware there are traffic problems and there's obviously not a lot of parking. It is a public area, so its expected that people will come out here to enjoy."
It's even more dangerous when people park where the road narrows at the no parking signs. Blue Hole visitor Michael Moore says he sees it all the time.
"It ain't very safe," explains Moore. "People just open their doors don't pay no mind to the cars coming or nothing. There's no reduced speed coming down there or nothing and it's right around a turn up there."
Sgt. Glick says parking is only one of the problems.
"Some of the other complaints we receive are from residents as far as people trespassing and walking across their property, littering, noise, and people being intoxicated," says Glick.
But Glick says the area is regularly patrolled.
"When not responding to complaints that are called in, the deputies that are assigned to this sector do frequent and do control this area," says Glick
But the Sheriffs can't be around all the time, so police rely on calls to get an idea of the situation. Glick says everyone can get along if they follow some simple rules.
“We just ask that people be responsible and pick up their trash and be respectful of the neighbors in the area," she states.
Glick says if a car is illegally parked, they'll try to find the owner to move it. But if it’s causing imminent danger to those on the road, it will be towed immediately.
