Jurors were back in a Chesapeake courtroom to deliberate a capital murder charge against a man who said he fatally shot a police detective in self-defense.
Ryan Frederick is on trial in Circuit Court for the January 17, 2008 death of Jerrod Shivers.
Shivers and a team of narcotics detectives were serving a search warrant when Frederick fired a gun from inside his home, striking the detective. Detectives were acting on a tip that Frederick was selling marijuana.
Jurors heard closing arguments Monday. Judge Marjorie A.T. Arrington told the panel to return for deliberations Tuesday and said they could consider lesser charges than the capital murder count sought by prosecutors.
