A 29-year-old man has been convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the death of a Chesapeake police detective.
The verdict came Wednesday, the second day of jury deliberations in Ryan Frederick's trial. Frederick was convicted in the 2008 shooting death of Jarrod Shivers, who had come to Frederick's home to search for a marijuana-growing operation.
The jury decided against a capital murder conviction, opting for the lesser offense. Voluntary manslaughter is punishable by up to ten years in prison.
Frederick also was convicted of marijuana possession, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum term of a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
The jury now will begin hearing evidence in the sentencing phase of the trial.
