Mineral County's schools superintendent says a recent student survey supports the need for a drug testing policy.
The county's board of education is considering whether to follow other county school systems and impose drug testing for students engaged in extracurricular activities.
Mineral County participated in The Pride Survey, which is given to students in 49 states.
At least 31 percent of the county's sophomores, juniors and seniors said they used marijuana, and at least 40 percent used tobacco products.
Students involved in extracurricular activities were less likely to use drugs.
Superintendent Skip Hackworth says the findings reinforce the need for a policy.
Comments on the proposal will be accepted until February 20.

While there is probably a lot of drug use, as is the case everywhere... Kids can lie on the surveys... We used to take the pride surveys in high school and kids said they used all these hard drugs every day, which isn't really possible. Anyway, I think that it's a good idea, however, the kids could, and probably are, lying.
They should also test teachers and all involved in the school system when hiring and randomly.
