The Augusta County Sheriff's Office is investigating a bank robbery, and it doesn't have much to go on.
A gunman walked into the Greenville BB&T Friday and locked employees in the bathroom, while he stole several thousand dollars in cash. After no arrest, the sheriff's office is relying on residents for information.
Officials are looking for an elusive, masked, unknown bank robber in Greenville, but days have gone by without an arrest.
Lt. Glenn Hanger says, "We canvassed the neighborhood, checked the surrounding area, the patrol continued through the night and into the following day to investigate leads, tips. Several investigators were called out on Saturday to pursue a lead which did not pan out."
Instead, Hanger says they're relying on Crime Stopper tips, call-ins, and concerns from family members that a loved one may have grabbed the cash. The problem is the description of the suspect isn't that descriptive.
Hanger says, "Quite frankly the description is sketchy. Bank personnel did a great job with what they could see, but unfortunately they couldn't make out a lot of his physical attributes."
Besides surveillance video and the bank robber's footprint found near the bank, investigators know very little. Hanger said a motive is unclear, so it's not certain whether this is the cloaked bank robber's first robbery or if the man is capable of striking again.
"We have no way of knowing whether this bank robber is a local individual or someone who has traveled a wider area and may have hit banks before or hit banks again," says Hanger. "We don't know the answer to that question."
The sheriff's office isn't requesting the help of outside authorities just yet, but it does say it's been a while since the office investigated a bank robbery.
The Augusta County Sheriff's Office is urging anyone with more information to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-322-2017.
