Everyone is anticipating their slice of the stimulus package that President Obama this week, including Virginia Department of Transportation officials in the Valley.
Officials are especially anxious because of state budget revisions that have further delayed a major road project in the Valley.
Don Komara, with the Harrisonburg VDOT Residency, says, "Right now the funding isn't even within the next six years, so if the stimulus money doesn't come, then we're not looking at Port Republic Road to be improved for several years."
The funding for the Port Republic Road project had previously been in the six year plan, but budget cuts earlier in the year removed the majority of the funding.
The project was estimated to be completed around 2012, about two years after the new Rockingham Memorial Hospital opens. Now it could take much longer.
The project still has preliminary engineering funds and right of way funds.
As for the Stone Springs Road Project, Rockingham County and the developers are asking for a special grant from the governor's initiative fund.
"Basically we're looking to tie into the city's project, where it ends and take it over to 33, and that's the south east connector projects," explains Komara.
VDOT and developers are hoping the grant can breath new life into the project.
"It's really kind of exciting. It's a new way of building a project. The developers are going to play a big roll in that along with the county, and we're hopefully able to get that project going quicker," says Komara.
There is a chance that the Southeast connector could be done in two different phases also due to funding issues.

Correction why RMH wants a new hosiptal
I don't understand why RMH was a new hosiptal with less beds . How is this suppose to be better for the county and city , Now we had a location with unfavorable roads . Can anyone explain this reasoning to me.
Well, VDOT, maybe if roads that don't need resurfacing were not resurfaced every 6 months, there just might be enough money for other (worthwhile) projects. LIKE MAYBE A ROAD WORTH TRAVELING TO REACH A HOSPITAL??? The location was stupid anyhow to anyone that ever drove Port Republic! Somehow that choice must benefit JMU.
