The economy continues to struggle all across the Valley, but one event in Augusta County may be just the spark the county needs to ignite tourism in the area.

Sounds of the Civil War echoed through Augusta County Sunday.

West Augusta Guard member Waverly Adcock says, "We really had a great turnout and we are really happy with how things have turned out."

People from the West Augusta Guard are bringing in people from all over to celebrate the birth of the first president of the United States, George Washington.

Waynesboro resident George Kate says, "My nine-year-old son is a history buff, so we had to come over here to check it out."

Kate and his family were passing through and decided to check out the festivities. Augusta County Supervisor Nancy Sorrells says that's exactly what she hopes to come from events like these.

Sorrells says, "People are having to tighten their belts and scrimp and save."

She also says with tough times in the economy, a boost in tourism is essential in getting the county back on it's feet.

"It's revenue that is easily turned into other uses for our local citizens," adds Sorrells.

Kate adds, "It brings people out into the town which they can see what is here, and maybe they can come back another day and see everything else."

With a good turnout, Adcock says he hopes businesses in the area can benefit from people passing through.

Adcock says, "I think it brings attention to our downtown shops and businesses and A think one of things we like to do as a unit is to help promote our town."

Sorrells says she expects more of these events in the future.

She says, "It's the right thing to have expanding during tough economic times."

There was also a bake sale at the event that raised money for Augusta County's Historical Society.
